If you started reading H.P. Lovecraft to a crazy person would their head explode from all the insanity?

I'm having a hard time reading H.P. Lovecraft without visual nightmares of the concepts in the book. (To be honest, I read the books years ago and they frightened me much worse than anything Poe or King had written). Is H.P. Lovecraft something that should be recommended to young or underdeveloped minds? It's a bit shocking, although I would never ban it or recommend censorship.
