The True Blood character Maryanne a Villain?

Is the True Blood character Maryanne evil? I am almost done with the first book. However, I am wondering if she is making people kill other people? Such as Dawn's murder. Or what about Malcolm and the three other vampires death? In the book it is implied the mod that killed those vampires were influenced. I am wondering this based on the things I see about her on the show.
