When I move my mouse my pointer it moves in a jerky motion?

it like it is stuck and i have to lift it up and put i down and it sticks when it is moving, it is like it's not getting a good grip. the pad is about 6 months old.. Is it the ball , the mouse pad or the mouse itself.
